The Lamoille County Players presents the Vermont Catamount Brass Band in concert at the historic Hyde Park Opera House on Friday, October 11 at 7:00pm. This foliage season concert, part of the LCP Music Series, will include a variety of traditional, contemporary and popular concert band music. The Hyde Park Opera House is handicap-accessible. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students; there is a special Family Rate of $25 available for this concert. For tickets, contact the Opera House at 888-4507.
The Brass Band has 26 members and features Cornets, Trumpets, Horns, Trombones, Baritones, Euphoniums, Tubas, Drums, and Percussion. The Band draws its musicians from the best jazz bands, concert bands, and orchestras in the Vermont community. Many are featured in the orchestra of LCP musicals, including Kelly "Katisha" Daige, Jim Diette, Patty Eisenman, Tom Lackey, Mike McGovern, Marty McRae, Jack Phipps, & Dov Schiller.
Marty McRae will be the Band's Guest Conductor. Marty is a long time music teacher. He has taught in Shelburne, Enosburg, and now Burlington. Marty is familiar to area audiences as a trombonist with Jazzmosis, the Vermont Jazz Ensemble, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Galaxy Brass Quintet, and the Maple Leaf 7 among many other ensembles.
Jack Phipps will be the Band's Cornet Soloist. In addition to numerous recording sessions and live radio broadcasts, Jack has shared the stage with Bob Hope, Al Martino, George Jessell, Alabama, The Four Tops, The Temptations, and performed for three Presidents of the United States. Jack performs with Jazzmosis, the Swingin' Vermont Big Band, Satin & Steel, the Vermont Jazz Ensemble, Lyric Theatre Company and the Galaxy Brass Quintet and many others. An expected highlight of the show will be his performance of classic solo "Willow Echoes."
The audience can enjoy a bit of history at the concert. The Opera House was built in 1912 in the days before radio and television for traveling vaudeville and medicine shows, guest theater companies, and small orchestras and bands just like the Vermont Catamount Brass Band. The Opera House and its fine acoustics is ideally suited for a brass band, and indeed a brass band, such as the Johnson Serenade Band seen last year in the Union Bank calendar, may well have played there.
