PRESS RELEASE

Catamount! Returns to Waterbury!

The Vermont Catamount Brass Band invites you to a Concert in the Park for an evening of musical entertainment. The Band will perform at the Rusty Parker Memorial Park on Main St. in Waterbury Village on Thursday evening, July 19, 2001 at 6:30 p.m. at the Waterbury Concert in the Park Series compliments of the Waterbury Rotary Club. The music will include a variety of Classical,Jazz, and Popular tunes and of course Marches.

This will be the Band’s third concert. The Band last performed at the Waterbury Congregation Church last January on Superbowl Sunday for an enthusiastic audience.

The Band has 26 members playing Cornets, Trumpets, Horns, Trombones, Baritones, Euphoniums, Tubas, Drums, and Percussion. The Band draws its musicians come from the best jazz bands, concert bands, and orchestras in Vermont.

Brass Bands originated in the early 1800’s at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Instrument makers added valves to brass instruments allowing them to play all the notes of the musical scale. Metals and Factories were plentiful and could mass produce brass instruments for workers eager to entertain themselves with their own music. The all brass bands were particularly well suited to playing outdoors because they are the original amplified musical instruments. Soon community, company and military bands converted to all brass instrumentation. Hallelujah.

The Band Concert in the Park is an old American tradition that listeners can enjoy. Before the advent of radios and television, many people enjoyed a stroll in a Park followed by a Band Concert of popular music and classical transcriptions on a Sunday evening.

The Band is happy to have their friend Harl Hoffman as the Guest Conductor again. Harl is a long time music teacher at Twinfield Union High School, member of the 40th Army Band and Vt. Jazz Ensemble, and Conductor of the Waterbury Community Band.

So come on down to the Bandstand, bring a picnic, and enjoy a pleasant evening of warm weather and good Brass Band music.
