About the Band

Welcome to the 2nd performance of the Catamount Brass Band. The Catamount Brass Quintet is pleased to have their friends join them to fill out the Brass Band. This Brass Band has the instrumentation of the Traditional British Brass Band. This type of Band existed in the US from the Civil War until WWI when it added Woodwinds and evolved into the Concert Bands one sees in Schools, Communities and the Military. With all of the fine Brass and Percussion Musicians in this area, we just had to put this group together.

The Bandsmen come from all walks of life and play music for fun. They play in groups that include the: Vermont 40th Army Band, Vermont Jazz Ensemble, Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. They represent at least four local Brass Quintets: the Catamount, Central Vermont, Constitution, and Galaxy Brass Quintets. You will find them at a variety of Concerts, Musicals, Weddings, and Church Services. Many perform as freelance jazz and classical musicians.

The Band is pleased to have Harl Hoffman as our Guest Conductor. Harl is a longtime local Music Educator and Saxophonist. Harl graduated from the University of Vermont in 1969. He has taught at Peoples Academy in Morrisville and now teaches music at Twinfield Union School. You can also see Harl playing the Baritone Saxophone with the 40th Army Band where he is a Staff Sergeant with 30 years of service. He plays Baritone Saxophone with the VJE, a group he has been a member of for 11 years. He has been conducting the Waterbury Community Band for 7 years. And last but not least, Harl was a percussionist with his wife Beth-Ann in our first concert last year.

The Band is pleased to have Tom Stephens as our Euphonium Soloist. Tom began playing the Euphonium in the 6th Grade in Niles, Michigan. This hobby later became his profession as he served in a Navy Band for 10 years where he played the Euphonium and sang in a Rock Band. Sergeant Stephens has been a Trombonist and Vocalist for the 40th Army Band for 3 years. He recently sang a solo with the Guard Band at Farmers Night at the State House. Tom also plays Trombone with the VPO and the Waterbury Community Band when he isn’t on his sailboat on Lake Michigan.
